A call for developers to collaborate in creating an expressive effect processors for performance MaxforLive(M4L) framework/device.
Details
Expressive effect processors for performance are awesome. Tim Exile and NIs The Finger, SoundBytes' Artillery 2 and Izotope's Stutter Edit 2 are all awesome, but they have significant limitations, which even using MIDI 1.0 could (and hopefully will), be overcome using M4L.
Specifically, Express FX is a project working towards a modular series of effect processors triggered by MIDI notes allowing the following:
1. each parameter can be modulated individually using CC messages (the finger only allows the two main parameters, so CC mapping causes clashes when more than one effect is triggered),
2. the ordering of each effect is dynamically selected as it is played (neither Artillery 2 nor Stutter Edit 2 allow this)
3. offers a simple effect insert format allowing M4L effects to be inserted and used within the plugin so that different effects can be added freely (a bit like in vcv rack, which is extremely awesome)
The suggestion is that each effect processor is given the same style of controls, similarly to The Finger: two main parameters (like cutoff and resonance for a filter), and a modulation rate offering an LFO or Envelope that controls each parameter with a simple amount knob for each parameter.
